Mom Leaves Kids In Freezing Car To Go Tan

by Jennifer

Have you seen this??
This absolutely blows my mind! What exactly goes through a person’s mind when they do something this ignorant? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to sit here on my high horse (which is actually not that high because I’m pretty short in the first place) and say I’ve never left my child sleeping in the car while I run in for something before. But I am going to point out that I never leave my child UNLESS he’s sleeping, I ALWAYS leave the heater or air conditioner on, I NEVER leave him if I’m going to be out of the car for more than 5 minutes or if the car will be out of my sight, and I ALWAYS lock the car from the outside so that no one can steal my child or my car.

In this particular case, the woman apparently left her children in the car while she went into a tanning salon to tan. The kids were left in the car for about 20 minutes, in freezing temperatures, and the car was locked but not left running = no heat. You will not convince me that this woman didn’t have a relative, friend or even a neighbor who would have watched her kids for half an hour so she could get her tan on. The article mentions a husband showed up in the midst of all this … why exactly did she not leave the kids with him? If he was working, why did she not set up a time for him to watch them later on in the evening or over the weekend?

In this case, the woman got lucky. The kids were okay (even though one was only 23 months old), cold, but okay. I guess some people just don’t learn until they get arrested for homicide.

The “why” of all this is simply being selfish and self-centered. There is no other explanation for leaving your children alone in a car while you go in for a tan. I saw so many children treated in this manner as a social worker. The bad thing about it was that, while the moms would pay lip service to having done something wrong, you could tell that they didn’t truly believe that they had.

It doesn’t make sense how someone can take their babies so lightly.

Do you know I had a friend that was arrested for leaving her kids in a running car (with A/C on) while she ran in to pick up a pizza? Her girls are 6 and 8 I think, but she still was charged with a felony child endangerment, and had to actually go in front of a judge with cuffs and chains and everything. Then things like this happen and it makes me wonder… And did you catch the thing at the bottom? Apparently she was going on vacation and “tanning was a priority.”

  4. Jennifer Says:

I saw that. I’m sorry for your friend, I can see myself doing something like that, especially if I could see my kids, and lock my car while I was doing it. But then again, I guess we can never be too careful. Pretty clear where this woman’s “priorities” lie.

About Parenting Toddlers

Raising a toddler is one of the most rewarding experiences. We learn just how much love we have in the deepest recesses of our hearts and just how deep the well of our patience can go with only three hours of sleep. We learn to see the world from a new perspective and we delight in the very basic achievements of our children. Amid their tantrums and shouting "No!" toddlers help us to stretch our imaginations and rediscover the books we enjoyed when we were children. Rebecca will share stories of her own children as toddlers, review parenting and children's books and offer suggestions for everything from potty training to catching bugs with a straight face. She will share craft ideas, fun activities, how to form a playgroup, nutrition for toddlers, development, adding a new sibling, your toddler as the youngest child, adopting a toddler and more.
